Montgomery County schools budget to be finalized Thursday

Montgomery County's schools budget should be finalized Thursday night. The seven-member school board called a special session for 6 p.m. to discuss and vote on the spending plan. Right now, the board's budget calls for $100 million -- an 11 percent increase from last year's plan.

The board must approve the budget before it can take a look at salaries for the coming year. They're expected to tackle those at a meeting May 6.

Snow White comes to Blacksburg

Starting today, the drama club at Falling Branch Elementary School will perform "Snow White and Seven Dwarfs" at the school. A group of about 50 students in second to fifth grade has been practicing the play since January as part of an after-school drama club. The students will put on a show for other students during the school day, and a free, public performance is slated for 7 p.m. Thursday.

Belview Spring Festival to be held this weekend

Belview Elementary School's PTA is hosting a Spring Fling on Friday night beginning at 7. An ice cream truck will offer free ice cream from 7 to 8 p.m. Other activities include a cupcake walk, a moon bounce, face painting and raffles.

Blacksburg High raises money for smiles

Through a dodgeball tournament and pizza sale, students at Blacksburg High School raised about $3,000 for Operation Smile. The national organization provides money to children who need surgery to repair a clef lip. The organization says each child can be helped with a donation of $240.
