The Floyd County High School girls basketball team advanced to today's Group A Division 2 state championship game with a 66-62 victory Friday over George Mason. This is the third consecutive year the Buffaloes have made it to the final four and the second year in row they will play for the state title. They lost the title game a year ago and were defeated in the semifinals in 2006.
The Buffaloes were led Friday by junior guard Brittany Avancini, who scored 31 points, grabbed seven rebounds and doled out seven assists. For a full story on Friday's game, see today's sports section.
Floyd's opponent in the title game today will be Lancaster High School (23-4), which defeated Chilhowie 53-45 in the other Group A Division 2 semifinal game Friday.
The Blacksburg High School boys didn't fare as well. The Bruins fell Thursday night in the Group AA semifinals to Millbrook 73-67 in overtime, after tying the score with 5.6 seconds to play in regulation on a 3-pointer by Daniel Mitchell. But Millbrook outscored Blacksburg 16-10 in the extra period. Blacksburg was led by Nick English with 19 points, Mitchell with 14, and Tyler Holmes and Greg Keys with 11 points each.
