Frank Salzano is a 1983 civil engineering graduate of Virginia Tech who has created the organization Hogs4Hokies to help memorialize the 32 victims of the April 16 shootings at Tech and to raise money for the 32 named memorial scholarships established after the shootings.
He said the group hopes to help "deserving students continue to benefit and grow in their memory forever, so that some small good can grow from this horrible tragedy." He lives in Centreville. We recently interviewed him by telephone.
When did you decide to create Hogs4Hokies? Why did you decide you must take action to help?
As an alumnus of Virginia Tech, I was so forever struck by the tragedy of April 16 that shortly thereafter I decided to do something to help raise awareness and help see that this cause is never forgotten. I spent five of the best years of my life at Virginia Tech and would hope that any little bit I can do would help preserve the Hokie spirit and show the world that we will prevail and we will never forget. We could have simply mailed a check ... but if you have ever seen a large group of motorcycles rolling down the road in a unified cause, it is one way to hopefully raise awareness for our cause.
As a Virginia Tech alumnus, what can you tell us about your experiences as a student here?
My experience at Virginia Tech has been -- and will forever be huge -- a part of me and, although shaken by this tragedy, I'm proud to see that the Hokie Nation is standing tall and will forever stand stronger together as a result.
What has been the response from the community to your event?
The response has been fantastic. We have received support from local businesses, law enforcement, first responders and military personnel, and many of the participants have helped with organizing and planning the event. There has been a wonderful outpouring of support from all sides. We continue to generate calls and e-mails of those wanting to support us.
Do you plan to have this event annually?
We will see how this year goes. If we can make an impact with some funds and raise awareness so those lost and affected forever are never forgotten, we may make this an annual event.
Is there anything you would like to say/promote about Virginia Tech? About motorcyclists?
Bikers sometimes get an undeserved bad rap, but most are concerned, supportive and proud citizens and would give you the shirt off their backs. Bikers and Virginia Tech share a unique blend of compassion, pride, camaraderie and support.
