Housing project in Blacksburg wins 3rd national award

Developers of an award-winning Blacksburg affordable housing project Monday announced another round of national recognitions.

The $2.5 million Roanoke-Lee Street affordable housing project built last year through a partnership between Community Housing Partners Corp. of Christiansburg and the Blacksburg Housing Office has received a 2008 Silver EnergyValue Housing Award a HUD Secretary's Award for Excellence.

The EnergyValue award recognizes development projects that integrate energy efficiency and environmental stewardship into home design. The HUD award recognizes public-private partnerships "that expand homeownership opportunities for underserved American families," according to a news release.

Both awards were bestowed at the National Association of Home Builders International Builders' Show last week in Orlando, Fla.

This brings to three the number of national awards won by the Blacksburg project, which provided homes for sale to 14 low- to moderate-income households through state, federal and local grant and loan programs. In March, the project won the national 2007 Energy Star Award for Excellence in Energy-Efficient Affordable Housing.

The architectural duplexes were designed to be 25 percent more energy efficient than conventional homes, and integrated several low-impact development technologies.

CHP is a nonprofit company that builds, rehabilitates and manages affordable housing projects in Virginia, Florida, Kentucky and North Carolina.
