Blacksburg coach honored with field dedication

Blacksburg High School will host a field dedication ceremony Oct. 3 in honor of head football coach David Crist.

The ceremony will be held at 1:15 p.m., before Blacksburg's game against Lord Botetourt. According to a news release from the school, the ceremony recognizes the 35 years that Crist has dedicated to Blacksburg High School as a teacher, mentor, role model and coach. The ceremony will include the unveiling the "David Crist Field" sign, along with a plaque presentation.

Crist also will be recognized at a schoolwide assembly hosted by the BHS Advanced Sports Marketing class at 2 p.m. Oct. 2. Following the assembly, BHS faculty and staff will have a reception honoring him.

BHS alumni, friends and community members are also invited to a social honoring Crist from 5 to 8 p.m. Oct. 3 at Custom Catering. Tickets for the social are $18 per person and can be reserved online at www.blacksburgfootball.com or by contacting Faye Crist at 951-5706. Social RSVPs are requested by Sept. 25.

VT hosts 5K, 1-mile Homecoming events

The University Bookstore Homecoming 5K Run/Walk and 1-Mile Fun Run will take place Oct. 11 at Margaret Beeks Elementary School.

The 1-Mile Fun Run will start at noon and the 5K Run/Walk will start at 1 p.m. The event will take place rain or shine.

Interested participants may register online (www.recsports.vt.edu) until midnight Oct. 8.

Race fees for online registration are $5 for the 1-Mile Fun Run and $15 for the 5K.

Participants can also register the day of the event at Margaret Beeks Elementary School, starting at 10:30 a.m. until the race start. Walk-up registration prices are $10 for the 1-Mile Fun Run and $20 for the 5K.

Proceeds from this event benefit Virginia Tech Recreational Sports student employee scholarships.

Each participant will receive a T-shirt. Post-race refreshments will be made available to participants. A free Domino's Pizza social will take place after the 5K race.

Catricala, Maurer honored by Seattle

Pulaski third baseman Vinnie Catricala and pitcher Brandon Maurer were named this week the outstanding players of the year for the Mariners' rookie league club in 2009.

Seattle Mariners Director of Minor League Operations Pedro Grifol announced the organization's picks.

Catricala was named the year's most valuable player at Pulaski, while Maurer was named the pitcher of the year.

"All of these players deserve credit for the hard work they have put in this season," Grifol said. "Our nine teams finished with a combined .528 winning percentage that ranked fifth out of all 30 Major League farm systems."

Catricala led Pulaski with eight homers and 40 RBIs. He finished the season with a batting average of .301.

Maurer picked up three wins this season in Pulaski and was a consistent part of the team's starting rotation. He finished with a 3.61 ERA and had 51 strikeouts.

In addition, Seattle recognized Catcher Brandon Bantz who started the season in Pulaski and later transferred to Everett.

Christiansburg man earns 2nd at bowling tourney

NRV SuperBowl's pro shop manager, Ronnie Horton of Christiansburg, recently captured second place in the Mooresville, N.C., open bowling tournament.

Horton advanced to the qualifying round of 16 with his 15th-place finish after the preliminary competition. With the match play format beginning in the round of 16, the right-hand bowler began his trek to the title contest.

He ousted Shawn McKee of Concord, N.C., in the deciding contest of a best-of-five series by a score of 195-165. Horton then swept Tom Tornow of George in two straight games in a best-of-three matchup.

After advancing in a one-game semifinal, Horton faced Regional Tour regular Chris Collins in the $2,500, winner-take-all final.

Collins, who is the overall points leader in the PBA South Regional competition, won with an outstanding final game of 240.
