Ladies achieve high marks in league action

School is in session in the entire New River Valley. I guess that means summer is, in reality, "done for 2009." As evidence of that fact, the NRV SuperBowl has begun league play across all ages, genders and skill levels.

Let's begin with one of the center's leagues that annually features some of the best female bowlers in the NRV, the "SuperBowlin Ladies."

They are now in week two of a 34-week season. Competition for weekly honors in the Aug. 24 games resulted in a total of two pins separating three competitors from high-game honors.

Brenda Jones rolled a 176, Nancy Moses a 175 and Karen Young was next with a 174. The scratch three-game series was equally close with Moses firing a 471 to set the top mark for the evening. Debbie Woods was a close second with a 468 and Janet Wimmer finished with a 459 set.

If a contest was held for the most creative team names, the SuperBowlin Ladies league would win easily. Among the team names are: Goof Balls, Pins and Roses, The Unpredictables, Misfits, Hokie Rollers. Creativity abounds both on the lanes and on the brains of these competitive ladies.

The New Image League began its season Aug. 26. The 10-team league also saw some strong "in the zone" performances.

Jessie Reyolds had a high individual game of 222 and a 571 series. Reynolds' most consistent competitor for the Wednesday night league's inaugural session was Pamela Sola, with a 196 game and 532 series.

Linda Ramsey was only two pins behind Sola with her 194 game. Finishing third in the scratch-series competition was Micki Huff with a 481 set.

The Golden Years Senior League was witness to some strong performances.

Nelva Viers had a 180 individual game and Sylvia Gray rolled a 166 to come in second among all female competitors for high-game honors.

One of the best bowling performances of the week came from Charlotte Alexander, who produced individual games of 202 and 199 en route to her 556 series.

She participates in the 36-team Up and At 'Em Senior league on Wednesday.

The SuperBowl welcomes a new league this week (Light-n-Lively) that is composed of senior bowlers from Pulaski and Montgomery counties.
