Let's see, what gets better with age? Wine gets better with age. Your patience gets better with age. If looking at bowling in the New River Valley, the level of top bowlers gets better with age.
The NRV SuperBowl's senior bowlers exhibited a great summer of bowling and appear headed to another strong start this fall.
Pulaski native Peggy White and Christiansburg's Willis Webb captured gold medals during the 2009 Commonwealth Games. Additionally, Webb, who bowls in the Up and At 'Em Senior League at the SuperBowl, won medals/ribbons at the Senior Olympics and National Senior Games, which took place two weeks ago in California.
League action began last week for the "Over 55" club. The Golden Years Senior League, which saw the number of teams increase this fall from 14 to 16, produced some scores that any bowler should strive to attain. Terry Hale rolled an impressive 242 game to set the pace for the first week of the fall/winter schedule.
Carlile Price and Carl Williams had high games as well with scores of 235 and 203, respectively. Brian Atkinson had the strongest overall day with individual scores of 233 and 224 on his way to a 635 series. Price finished with a 570 series and Hale's three-game series produced a 568 score.
On the ladies' side of the ledger, Nelva Viers had the high game with a 171 and was followed closely by Judy Dowdy and Mary Etta Young with individual games of 169 and 168, respectively.
The Up and At 'Em Senior League, which began league play Aug. 19, was witness to four games of 200 or better. Don Bishop and Harley Helms came out smoking with matching games of 213. Bob Smith rolled a 205, and Rick Bailey notched a 200 game.
Matilda Shumate paced the ladies with a 177, narrowly edging Lucille Wilson, who rolled a 170 game. Carol Smith had the third-highest game among all females with a 168 game. The Up and At 'Em Senior League, which is one of the largest leagues in the area with 36 teams, competes at 1 p.m. every Wednesday at the NRV SuperBowl in Christiansburg.
