The Battle over Blair Mountain

For more than a decade, factions have lobbied and lawyered about the fate of Blair Mountain, site of the miners' armed march of 1921. Local activists, preservationists and environmentalists want the mountain placed on the National Register of Historic Places. Mining companies want to employ mountaintop removal mining to get at the coal beneath the mountain's surface.
