Art at the Market showcases local work

About 40 artists took part in the event, which has been held for more than 25 years.

The annual Art at the Market event was held July 17 at the Blacksburg farmers market.

It has been held for more than 25 years, showcasing art from local artists from the New River Valley and surrounding areas.

About 40 artists exhibited their paintings, handmade wood items, stained glass and photography.

The event was coordinated by Downtown Blacksburg Inc. and sponsored by Mish Mish, Fringe Benefit, Community Arts Information Office, Matrix Gallery and the town of Blacksburg.

The following is a list of the winning artists, with comments from the judge:

2-D category:

First place: Kirk Carter, "Poetic sensibility is translated through his photography"

Second place: Melissa Rudge, "Fresh and funky paintings that reveal new narratives each time you revisit them"

Third place: George Wills, "Graphic scenes of Downtown Blacksburg on small boxes"

Honorable mention: Makayla Songer, "Small abstract paintings and illusions"

3-D category:

First place: Becca Imbur, "Especially for her handmade book 'Orange #2' -- comical and insightful juxtapositions or words and their definitions"

Second place: Evan Beloni, "Creative use of salvaged and recycled materials to create rhythmic abstract sculptures alongside whimsical creatures"

Third place: Jennifer Lovejoy, "Displayed exceptional craftsmanship and unique vision through her chosen medium"

Honorable mention: Dale Norton, "Highlighted the beauty and natural forms found in the wood."
