Readers share their opinions on lawn project

"Sometimes it's best to keep your mind open and your mouth shut."

That was some friendly advice I received from a Virginia Tech administrator after my recent column about the bulldozing of Henderson Lawn.

Actually, I wish I had opened my mouth a long time ago because, frankly, I think this project is a huge mistake and a costly one, too, since Henderson Lawn had been one of Blacksburg's best family-friendly features. And what we're getting in return -- a new theater -- doesn't seem that different from what we already have at nearby Squires Student Center, a not-that-old theater. Nor do I understand why it had to go right there, right now.

But clearly, not everyone agreed with me.

"This is probably one of the most idiotic pieces I've ever read," wrote Lee Williams regarding my column.

Jo Evans, Tech's community arts specialist, wrote, "I'm a resident of Blacksburg and appreciate any efforts to maintain a viable downtown environment." Evans also called the construction "the beginning of a comprehensive project that will complement future concerts on the lawn and expand the opportunity for public and green space."

"Give us a chance to let this one play out," wrote Lucinda Jennings with the Office of the University Architect. "I am certain the end results will bring more people downtown and these folks will shop and eat while there."

Bottom line: Tech will get that chance to play it out, whether I wish it or not, and someday we'll have a chance to compare our fond memories of Henderson Lawn with their new building.
