Bus cameras waste money
New River Forum
While the bus cameras are not a bad idea, I do have to wonder if our money couldn't be spent on something more needed ("Bus cameras to keep an eye on lawbreakers," April 11). According to the story, there were 33 child deaths related (maybe) to bus entering or exiting nationwide. While one is too many, there are other things, like hunger or drugs, that cause many, many more deaths.
Maybe the money spent on the purchase and upkeep of this camera system could have done more good addressing another issue.
On top of that, the cameras run constantly, not just when the driver turns on the red lights. Makes you wonder what all they want these cameras to be watching. Big Brother already invades our privacy more than necessary, and this just increases the invasion.
Let's spend our tax dollars on something that will actually help our kids, not just more surveillance of private law-abiding people.
Barber, Vanhoozier in Christiansburg
I have known Mike Barber for more than 30 years and have served with him on the Christiansburg Town Council for three years. Before council meetings, he does his homework and is up-to-date on agenda items. He always considers citizens' input before voting.
He has represented council on the Recreation Department Commission for many years; the success of this department speaks for his leadership and guidance.
Jim Vanhoozier and I worked together for approximately 40 years at Moog. He was a dedicated, hardworking and capable individual. He began as a machinist, served in several management positions and retired as business development manager.
Vanhoozier has served on the Planning Commission for three years and is vice chairman. When considering an issue, he is methodical in his approach, using citizen input and the comprehensive plan.
Barber and Vanhoozier have been members of the Kiwanis Club for many years. I admire and respect their loyalty to the club and community. Both are dedicated to our youth programs.
These folks have the financial experience to control expenses and keep taxes from increasing.
Please join me and vote for Barber and Vanhoozier.
Vote for Mike Barber
I encourage all voters to vote for Michael Barber in the May 6 Christiansburg Town Council election. Barber is always available to answer any e-mail or telephone call you might have with him.
When I approached him about the conditions of the sidewalks in the Park area of town, the repairs/replacement with new sidewalks were done as quickly as possible. He is willing to listen to concerns and complaints. Some he might not be able to fix as you would like, but at least he listens and will even come and inspect your particular concern.
I encourage everyone to attend the candidate forums and listen to the individual candidates answer the questions put forth. I attended the first forum and plan to attend all, but after just one, I have made my decision on who I will support -- Barber, Sam Bishop and Henry Showalter.
