CHRISTIANSBURG -- Blacksburg High School has been closed in the wake of the gymnasium’s collapse Saturday, officials announced this afternoon.
Officials are in the process of evaluating each of Montgomery County Public Schools' buildings as a precaution to ensure they are safe in the wake of back-to-back snowstorms.

There is no indication of an issue with any other building.
However, a district-wide cancellation of classes was under consideration. School officials were preparing to release more information to the public as soon as possible.
The implications of a roof cave-in that destroyed the gymnasium Saturday afternoon were beginning to sink in as Montgomery County school officials met Sunday afternoon at the school district office. Some 1,200 students attend Blacksburg High and the school is supported by 150 faculty.
Blacksburg town officials have barred access to the high school until the gymnasium area has been stabilized, said Walt Shannon, interim school superintendant.
“The building is closed. It is not condemned,” Shannon said.
Shannon said snow was being examined as a possible cause of the collapse but it is not certain heavy snow was to blame.
Officials had preliminary discussions about the possibility of relocating classes to other buildings.
“Blacksburg High School is going to be closed for a while,” Shannon said.
Officials expressed gratitude that the collapse occurred while the building was empty. Hundreds packed the gym Friday night for a boy's basketball game.
The collapse of the Blacksburg High gym was a close call, according to school board chairman Wendell Jones.
The girls basketball team was practicing in the gymnasium when somebody spotted a wall cracking, Jones said.
“They were asked to leave the building and parents come pick them up,” Jones said.
A team official contacted a school facilities official who, in turn, called an engineering company, which sent a representative. Those officials went inside and took a look around.
“They quickly determined they needed to vacate the building based on what they saw from the structure damage,” Jones said.
A check was made to ensure no one was inside the school, Jones said, and no one was injured.
The school representatives and engineer “were out in the parking lot” when the gym collapsed, Jones said.
“There were two additional searches conducted last night by fire and rescue along with a structural engineer. We are still very confident that no one was in the building at the time of the collapse,” Jones said.
