Mack to pull out of Pulaski Co. plant

Nearly a year after first announcing a plan to do so, Mack Trucks Inc. announced this morning that it would pull production of its highway truck line out of a Pulaski County plant in order to consolidate production at one facility in Macungie, Pa.

Company officials said the transfer is expected to result in an employment reduction at the local plant, which will continue to produce Volvo Trucks North America’s entire product range, but it is too early to say how many jobs would be lost. When the plans were first unveiled last August, company spokesman John Mies estimated that 200 of the then 1,400-person workforce would be trimmed if the line was eliminated immediately. Earlier this year, plant officials said employment stood at about 1,200.

According to a release from the company, the plan involves transferring assembly of Mack highway vehicles from the plant in Virginia’s New River Valley to Macungie, where Mack’s construction and refuse trucks are assembled, to take advantage of efficiencies arising from consolidated assembly, and to create a brand-unique environment for Mack customers.

The company expects to begin the transfer in September and complete it by the end of November, during which period there will be a gradual production ramp-down at the Southwest Virginia plant.
