A Shawsville man was arrested early this morning after a standoff with deputies that lasted several hours.

The Montgomery County Sheriff's Office responded to a call about a domestic dispute on Poplar Hollow Road at 8:38 p.m., according to a news release from the sheriff's office.

Upon their arrival, the deputies heard gunshots. The uninjured victim was located and moved to a safe location, the sheriff's office said.

The suspect, 74-year-old Frank Edward Craig Jr., refused to come out of the house. Hostage negotiators from the Christiansburg Police Department attempted to talk to Craig for an hour and a half but weren't successful in getting him to come out, the sheriff's office said.

Chemical agents were then introduced into the home and tactical team members from the sheriff's office and the Blacksburg Police Department went inside and took Craig into custody.

Master Deputy Jimmy Bowyer said Craig was taken into custody about 2:15 a.m.

He is being held in the Montgomery County Jail on charges of maliciously shooting a firearm, reckless handling of a firearm and brandishing a firearm.
