Virginia Tech student dies after skateboard crash
A Virginia Tech student injured in a skateboarding accident last week died Saturday from his injuries, Tech officials said this afternoon.
Gregory Weiner, 18, a freshman from Virginia Beach studying engineering, was riding a skateboard he borrowed on a sidewalk alongside Aggie Quad Lane on campus about 7 p.m. Dec. 15. He fell off the skateboard as he moved off the sidewalk onto a crosswalk, said Assistant Chief Tom Foster of the Virginia Tech Police Department.
Foster said Weiner was moving a high speed down a steep hill when the board slipped from under him. The road runs from Ambler Johnston residence hall past Dietrick dining hall, south of the Drillfield. No other vehicles or people were involved in the crash, Foster said.
Police and rescue responded to the incident at 7:14 p.m. Weiner, who was not wearing a helmet, was unconscious and unresponsive when they arrived, Foster said.
Weiner suffered head injuries and was taken to Montgomery Regional Hospital and then to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital.
Foster said Weiner’s family contacted the university Sunday morning to say he had died.
