Judge charged with DUI

Virginia State Police charged a Juvenile and Domestic Relations judge on Saturday with driving under the influence.

Judge Michael Keith Blankenship, 43, of Wytheville was arrested about 5:30 p.m. Saturday in Smyth County, said Sgt. Michael Conroy of the Virginia State Police.

Blankenship, who hears cases primarily in Wythe County Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court, sits in the 27th Judicial District, which covers Montgomery, Floyd, Giles, Pulaski, Carroll, Wythe, Grayson and Bland counties and the cities of Radford and Galax. He is also a former Wythe County commonwealth’s attorney.

Conroy said a call went out Saturday evening to be on the lookout for a Subaru being driven erratically on Interstate 81. Shortly thereafter, Trooper R.D. Collins pulled Blankenship over on the northbound lanes between Chilhowie and Marion. The judge was arrested on charges of driving under the influence, a misdemeanor, and a civil charge of refusing to submit to a Breathalyzer test.

No court date has been set. Smyth County Commonwealth’s Attorney Roy F. Evans Jr. has recused himself from the case.
