Radford burn victims identified

Two men suffered serious burns when they apparently cut into a live wire at the Radford Foundry on Main Street early this morning.

Stephen Edward Bakaitis, 46, and Christopher B. Goad, 24, both suffered severe burns over at least 60 percent of their bodies and were transported via Carilion’s Life-Guard 11 to the DeCamp Burn Center at the University of Virginia Health Sciences Center in Charlottesville, according to the Radford police department.

Bakaitis and Goad are currently listed in critical condition.

Goad is Bakaitis’s step-son and both men are from Radford.

Police have started a criminial investigation, believing at this point that the men trespassed onto the property to try to steal copper wire, according to a news release issued by Radford Public Relations Coordinator Becky Hawke.

Fire and EMS crews responded to the foundry at 12:35a.m.

Fire crews used an aerial ladder truck to remove one man from a 50-foot high roof, while the other was able to climb down on his own.

The Radford Foundry is owned by Intermet and its parent company, Q Investments of Fort Worth, Texas.  It has been closed since 2004.
