Sunday, April 02, 2006Mill Mountain beats Starbucks and New River Coffee for top honorsScott Elich, manager of Blacksburg’s Mill Mountain Coffee and Tea, said his branch of the small-town Virginia chain was Blacksburg’s first coffee shop. Opened in 1991, the current location at 700 N. Main St. offers a varied menu. “Bigger coffee chains don’t serve sandwiches, and we do in addition to all of the same coffee drinks.” Elich said. “We offer more variety.” Mill Mountain’s coffee is roasted and ground fresh, in-house daily. In regard to the Seattle-based coffee-monster Starbucks, Elich said Mill Mountain’s prices won’t break the bank either. “Our coffee is better and less expensive. We don’t have to build 6,000 stores a year, so we don’t have to charge that much to keep up,” he said. Erin Zlomek |
