Backstreets beats the chains for best pizza

Backstreets in Blacksburg.

With Italian fare and more, Backstreets Restaurant at 207 S. Main St. in Blacksburg won the Best Pizza category.

In a college town with lots of big-name-pizza competitors, restaurant owner Eric Strum keeps his cool.

“We don’t really pay attention to the big chains, we just pay attention to what we’re doing and what our customers say.”

Strum said fresh ingredients delivered daily give his pizza a boost above the rest.

The pizza dough and sauce are made fresh in the restaurant. And the pizza cheese is grinded in-house. Strum says Backstreets’ pies are made with whole milk cheese which “gives the pizza kind of a buttery taste to it.”
