Best place to be outdoors if you’re swinging a club or swinging from a hammock

While we have given awards for Best Place to Meet People, Best First Date and the Best Sunset, there was certainly no dominant vote-getter. There were more than 40 different responses in all three categories.

 Cascades

The Roanoke Times | File

The Cascades waterfall makes the sometimes-rocky hike worth the effort.

Best hike

If you’re looking to get your hike on, take a stroll over to the Cascades.

Best bike ride

Biking up U.S. 460 from Christiansburg to Blacksburg can be treacherous. Our readers smartly prefer the Huckleberry Trail.

Best place to sled

It’s hard to putt on the snow, so the Municipal Golf Course in Blacksburg is a great place to sled.

Best place to fish

If you need to catch some fish for dinner, head over to the New River in Radford. Other spots along the New River also rated well, though not everyone wanted to share.

Best place to camp

Claytor Lake

Best place to fly a kite

Virginia Tech Drillfield

Best place to walk your dog

Walking the dog can be done anywhere, but our readers prefer the Huckleberry Trail (watch out for the bikes), Bisset Park and Pandapas Pond.

 Golf

Gene Dalton | The Roanoke Times

The River Course golf course in Fairlawn offers amazing views of the New River.

Best golf course

Three battled in this event, with the River Course beating out the Blacksburg Country Club and Draper Valley.

Best place to view the fall leaves

Even if visitors to the landmark have fallen for three straight years, our readers like the Blue Ridge Parkway for leaf-watching.

Best place to get away from it all

Mountain Lake
