A Virginia Tech Police Department patrol car hit a man riding a bike Thursday afternoon after the cyclist ran a stop sign.
Sgt. Rob Carpentieri of Virginia State Police said Officer Austin Sumners was driving east on Draper Road, off campus in Blacksburg, when a bike ran the stop sign at the intersection with Clay Street.
The cyclist, 22-year-old Matthew Bennett of Blacksburg, was heading south on Clay Street about 1:26 p.m. when he was hit by the marked patrol car, Carpentieri said.
Bennett was treated at the scene for minor injuries and the officer was uninjured.
Carpentieri said no charges have been filed and the officer will not be disciplined because the bicyclist ran the stop sign.
