Check girl battling bone cancer dies

Kassidy Foster, 12, of Check, died at home Monday of complications from osteosarcoma, the most common type of bone cancer in children.

Kassidy was a sixth-grader at Check Elementary School in Floyd County and a gymnast before a biopsy in March showed a malignant tumor in her right knee. Surgeons amputated her right leg May 3. She underwent a series of chemotherapy treatments at Carilion Roanoke Community Hospital for several months as the cancer spread to other parts of her body.

Last week, Kassidy, along with her parents, Danny and Tammy Foster, and sister, Courtney, traveled to Los Angeles, where Kassidy was granted a day of shopping and royal treatment by the Make-A-Wish Foundation, according to www.samefight.org, a Web site featuring updates on Kassidy and two other children who have battled cancer.

The family returned home to Check on Thursday, and Kassidy returned to the hospital Saturday after experiencing difficulty breathing. A chest X-ray found that the cancer had infused her lungs and she would likely have only a few days left to live, according to samefight.org.

Preliminary funeral arrangements include a memorial service at Faith Fellowship Church in Wirtz and visitation at Gardner Funeral Home in Floyd, according to samefight.org. A funeral will be at Gardner Funeral Home with burial at Wilson Cemetery in Check.
