More internship information

The basic info:

  • Paid internships run 12 weeks.
  • Preference is given to students who have had previous internships or have worked regularly for their college newspaper.

What's it like to work in The Roanoke Times’ newsroom?

The Roanoke Times is an award-winning 100,000-circulation daily in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. We pride ourselves on a collegial newsroom that has become a national leader in expanding print journalism to include online and multimedia. Check out some of our Multimedia Projects.

As an intern, you'll be assigned to one of our reporting teams -- and be assigned real stories. You'll be assigned an editor and a mentor who will meet with you regularly to help track your progress.

We're small enough that you'll get a hands-on experience, and perhaps stories on page one. But we're big enough that when we had a National Guard unit called up, we sent a reporter and photographer with them to Afghanistan for six weeks. (Sorry, they weren't interns.)

Finally, how to apply:

  1. Fill out the official application online
  2. Send a cover letter explaining your interest, along with a resume, references, and 8-10 examples of your work to: Dan Casey, Senior Editor for Enterprise The Roanoke Times P.O. Box 2491 Roanoke, Va. 24010

Questions? E-mail Dan.Casey@roanoke.com. No e-mail applications, please.

Deadline: December 1
