- Preference is given to students who have had previous internships.
What's it like to work in The Roanoke Times’ newsroom?
The Roanoke Times wants you to join our staff of nine award-winning photojournalists and two photo editors committed to strong photojournalism in print and online.
The internship will run from late May to August. This is an advanced internship where you will be working on daily assignments as well as stories and multimedia projects. Current students and recent graduates are eligible. Our interns are treated as a staff photographer and are closely supervised and coached. You will cover a wide range of daily assignments and be strongly encouraged to produce one solid story.
Applicants are supplied with Nikon or Cannon digital gear, lighting equipment and mini-disc recorders (for audio slideshows) and should be technically proficient in an electronic darkroom.
The Roanoke Times is a 100,000 circulation newspaper in Southwest Virginia. One of our photographers was named NPPA photographer of the year (smaller markets) for 2005, and our staff consistently ranks in the top five newspapers in NPPA’s Region 3 for clip wins and have a commitment to displaying strong images well. Among our interns are former Hearst and CPOY winners, Eddie Adams participants and Fulbright scholarship winners.
Finally, how to apply:
Portfolios containing photo stories and singles with good use of light, color and compositional style will stand out. The ability to capture broadcast-quality sound and video for multi-platform publication is a plus but not necessary.
