Longtime Roanoke educator Doris Ennis recently received the Margaret Sue Copenhaver Contribution to Education Award.
The annual honor is given on the final day of Roanoke College’s Margaret Sue Copenhaver Institute for Teaching and Learning, a three-day training program for teachers and administrators.
The institute, named for retired Richmond teacher Margaret Sue Copenhaver, is given to an educator who shares Copenhaver’s passion for teaching. Since 2003 administrators of the institute have selected a recipient for the award.
Ennis, who has served as a teacher, principal and acting superintendent for Roanoke City Public Schools, is currently a part-time consultant at William Fleming High School.
She started her career in education as a teacher at the former Booker T. Washington Junior High School and Patrick Henry High School. She was also an assistant principal at William Fleming and principal at William Ruffner Middle School before retiring in 1993. She later came back to the division for several special assignments, including acting superintendent.
“Doris has no personal agenda,” Roanoke Superintendent Rita Bishop said in a statement. “I have never seen her be unprofessional for a single second. It’s all for the kids.”
