The Greater Raleigh Court Civic League donated $2,000 to two Roanoke teachers and surprised them with checks last week.
At Fishburn Park Elementary School several Roanoke administrators, including Superintendent Rita Bishop, quietly slipped into Matthew Newton's classroom.
Newton, a special education teacher at the school, was busy working with students and slowly realized something was up.
"Oh my goodness," he said. "Oh my goodness."
Officials explained they had a check for him from the civic league. Newton had applied for the funds before Christmas, proposing they be used for purchasing a wheelchair-accessible swing for the school's already handicapped-accessible playground.
Newton and James Madison Middle School teacher Anna Beebe Sachs were selected among those who applied for the funds. School leaders later went over to James Madison to surprise Sachs also.
Sachs, the school's Food for Thought instructor, will use the funds to buy resource books and equipment. The grant money will help supply school system gardens and others with seeds.

Several area schools have earned grants from ExxonMobil. The $500 or $1,000 grants are used to support science and math programs.
In Roanoke, Crystal Spring Elementary and Wasena Elementary schools were awarded funds from the ExxonMobil Educational Alliance.
In Roanoke County, Burlington Elementary, Clearbrook Elementary, Herman L. Horn Elementary, Hidden Valley Middle, Northside High, Northside Middle and Oak Grove Elementary schools also received the grant funds.

Members of Franklin County High School's Air Force Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps will compete in a national academic bowl in Washington this summer.
The school's JROTC academic team advanced through two rounds of competition and will now face off against other students nationwide in the 2013 Air Force JROTC Academic Bowl Championship. The championship is June 21-25.
Franklin County's team consists of Sydney Brown, Jonathan Scott, Nicholas Eble and Dylan Settle.

Roanoke Valley Christian Schools will hold an open house March 14.
The event will be held from 8:45 to 11 a.m. and will include time for questions, campus tours and classroom visits. The school offers pre-kindergarten education, as well as K-12 instruction.
