PetSmart has signed a lease to open its second Roanoke store at Hunting Hills Shopping Center.

The pet store will open in a 17,168-square-foot space next to Kohl's, PetSmart spokesman Jeff Davis said Thursday. The company plans to open the store in March or April, he said.

PetSmart said last summer that it had plans to open a second location in Roanoke - its first opened at Valley View Crossing in 1999 - but a few months later a spokeswoman said there were no definite plans for the second store.

In the meantime, Petland, located in a retail center next to Hunting Hills Shopping Center, closed. The owner of Petland said at the time of the closing that he was retiring and could not find a buyer for the store.

  • Advance Auto Parts Inc. has launched its national sneaker campaign to raise funds for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. The effort runs through Oct. 5. The Roanoke-based company says it has raised more than $35 million to support the foundation over the past 19 years.
