NORFOLK — Norfolk Southern is outlining key initiatives for the railroad operator to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and its environmental footprint.

The Norfolk-based company described its strategy in a filing with the international not-for-profit CDP.

The initiatives include: purchasing new, more fuel-efficient locomotives; increasing capacity and fluidity of the company’s major rail corridors; continuing research and development of alternative power; and recycling older locomotives by equipping them with more fuel-efficient, cleaner-burning engines.

The company says it has made progress toward its goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 10 percent per revenue ton mile between 2009 and 2014.

Norfolk Southern operates about 20,000 route miles in 22 states and the District of Columbia and serves every major container port in the eastern U.S.
