Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital has been named one of the top 10 hospitals in Virginia by U.S. News & World Report.

The hospital was ranked eighth in the annual report, which was released this week.

U.S. News sifted through data from nearly 5,000 hospitals nationwide to rank the best in 16 adult specialties. Death rates, patient safety and hospital reputation were a few of the factors considered.

Roanoke Memorial was the only hospital in Southwest Virginia to receive a top 10 ranking by the report, which examined 128 facilities statewide.

"We work hard every day to take care of patients as best as we can. We are committed to this region and to serving the needs of this region, so we're very pleased with the rankings," Carilion President and CEO Nancy Agee said.

Sentara Norfolk General Hospital and Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center in Richmond received the top statewide rankings.
