The Dunkin' Donuts on Franklin Road in Roanoke is undergoing a remodel that will add seating but remove the Baskin-Robbins ice cream counter.
Franchisee Ken Walker said work started last week. The store likely will close for several days this week so crews can continue work.
The remodel is required for Walker to renew his franchise agreement. To keep Baskin-Robbins, Walker said he would have had to spend an extra $110,000. Baskin-Robbins made up 10 percent to 15 percent of the business, so Walker said he decided to close that part of the business and use its space to add seating for Dunkin' Donuts.
Walker described the finished look as having a "coffee shop feel."
He would not disclose how much money he is investing in the remodel. A building permit filed in Roanoke values the work at $100,000.
