The building that formerly housed Backstreets Pizza and Grill in Blacksburg will be demolished to make way for a Mellow Mushroom location, franchise owner Leslie Knapp said today.
The restaurant chain, with Virginia locations in Charlottesville and Bristol, is known for its gourmet pizzas and craft beers. The Blacksburg location is scheduled to open in the spring of 2014.
Knapp said the restaurant at the corner of Washington and South Main streets will have a seating capacity of about 225 on two levels and will offer outdoor dining.
Knapp opened a location in Hickory, N.C., less than three years ago. Most Mellow Mushroom locations are individually owned and operated, and many owners operate more than one location, she said.
Knapp and her husband, Jeff, both graduated from Virginia Tech in 1983, and their son graduated from Tech last year. The Knapps have two daughters currently enrolled at Tech.
