Saturday, September 16, 2006Roanoke College has another carbon monoxide leak; no one injuredA clogged flue pipe in the boiler system is believed to be the cause of an early morning carbon monoxide leak at the Sigma Chi fraternity house. The Salem Fire Department responded to a call early Saturday morning of a carbon monoxide leak inside a building at Roanoke College. About 1 a.m., a resident of the Sigma Chi fraternity house contacted campus safety officials when the carbon monoxide alarm went off in the house. Campus officials evacuated the house, and the fire department determined that there was carbon monoxide in the building. Seven people were in the building at the time of the leak, said Teresa Gereaux, director of public relations. Lt. John Prillaman, of the Salem Fire Department, said the cause of the leak was from a clogged flue pipe in the boiler system, but that no one felt the effects of the leak. "We are determined to keep our campus safe, and it is reassuring to know that the safety measures we implemented this summer are working," said Sabine O’Hara, president of the college, in a news release. "This incident is also a reminder that all of us need to take it seriously when we hear an alarm sounding on campus. The residents of the house immediately contacted Campus Safety, and I am grateful for their quick and appropriate response." Roanoke College’s Sections dorm building was the site of a carbon monoxide leak on July 14 that claimed the life of 91-year-old Lutheran pastor Walter J. Vierling and sent 62 others to the hospital. |
