Schools across region honored for academic performance
Gov. Bob McDonnell and the Virginia Board of Education this morning released a list of schools that earned this year's Virginia Index of Performance awards.
According to a news release, "the incentive program recognizes schools and divisions that far exceed minimum state and federal accountability standards."
The Governor's Award for Educational Excellence is given to schools that meet all benchmarks for two consecutive years and achieve applicable excellence goals in several areas, including elementary reading and high school graduation.
The following schools in the Roanoke region received the award:
- Cloverdale and Greenfield elementary schools in Botetourt County.
- Burnt Chimney, Ferrum and Lee M. Waid elementary schools in Franklin County.
- Gilbert Linkous, Harding Avenue and Prices Fork elementary schools in Montgomery County.
- Bonsack, Cave Spring, Clearbrook, Glen Cove, Green Valley, Oak Grove and Penn Forest elementary schools in Roanoke County.
- G.W. Carver Elementary School in Salem.
The next tier of awards, the Board of Education Excellence Awards, are given to schools and divisions that meet the accountability benchmarks and make strides towards goals for increased achievement and expanded educational offerings. Only two divisions statewide received this honor, including Lexington City Schools.
The following schools in the Roanoke region received the award:
- Breckinridge and Buchanan elementary schools in Botetourt County.
- Boones Mill and Glade Hill elementary schools in Franklin County.
- Crystal Spring Elementary School in Roanoke.
- Back Creek, Fort Lewis, Masons Cove and Mount Pleasant elementary schools, Glenvar Middle School and Cave Spring High School in Roanoke County.
- East Salem, South Salem and West Salem elementary schools in Salem.
The third tier awards, the Board of Education Competence to Excellence Awards, are presented to schools that met the benchmarks for two consecutive years and made progress toward the goals of the governor and the board.
The following Roanoke-area schools received this honor:
- Forest, New London Academy and Otter River elementary schools in Bedford County.
- Colonial Elementary and Lord Botetourt High schools in Botetourt County.
- Callaway, Henry, Snow Creek and Sontag elementary schools in Franklin County.
- Auburn and Belview elementary schools in Montgomery County.
- Fishburn Park and Grandin Court elementary schools in Roanoke.
- Glenvar, Herman L. Horn, Mountain View and W.E. Cundiff elementary and Glenvar and Hidden Valley high schools in Roanoke County.
- Andrew Lewis Middle and Salem High schools in Salem.
