11 Roanoke-area schools earn governor's award

Thirty-seven other schools in the region were recognized for meeting state and federal benchmarks for two consecutive years, increased student achievement and expanded educational opportunities.

Eleven schools in the Roanoke region received the Governor’s Award for Educational Excellence, which Gov. Bob McDonnell and Virginia Department of Education officials announced today.

The top honor is given to high-performing schools and divisions that meet state and federal benchmarks for at least two consecutive years and meet excellence goals in elementary reading, algebra 1 enrollment by eighth grade, college-level course enrollment, high school graduation, increasing numbers of advanced diplomas and career certifications awarded, and participation in the Virginia Preschool Initiative.
