Microsoft data center to locate in southeast Virginia
Microsoft Corp. will invest up to $499 million and create 50 new jobs at a data center in Mecklenburg County.
In making the announcement Friday, Gov. Bob McDonnell called it the largest economic investment in Southern Virginia history.
Virginia beat out North Carolina and Texas for the facility.
It's possible that Mecklenburg County, just west of Interstate 85 and north of the North Carolina line, beat out Montgomery County for the center.
Earlier this year, Montgomery County officials confirmed that a company was considering a large data center project for the Falling Branch Corporate Park in Christiansburg. According to economic development documents released by Virginia in early June, the possible Montgomery County data center would cost at least $150 million and employ at least 50 people at an average wage of $55,000 a year.
Montgomery County officials have not returned a request for comment this afternoon.
