Robber flees lunchtime holdup at downtown Wachovia Bank branch

A pot-bellied man in a ball cap escaped on foot after a lunchtime holdup at the Wachovia Bank branch in downtown Roanoke today.
The man, wearing a T-shirt, long pants and cap, handed a teller a note demanding money and fled the bank, at Jefferson Street and Campbell Avenue, with an amount of cash police wouldn't disclose, said police spokeswoman Aisha Johnson.
Police were called at 12:36 p.m. and immediately swarmed downtown, with officers posted at major intersections searching for the man.
The Roanoke police forensic unit and several bicycle officers were at the bank, near the heart of downtown.
A sign posted at the bank says it closed, "due to an unexpected emergency."
Roanoke police asked for help identifying the robber.
Anyone with information is asked to call police at 853-5959 or Crime Line at 344-8500. Crime Line may offer a reward for information that leads to an arrest.
