Roanoke School Board suggests cutting 146 full-time positions in proposed budget
The preliminary categorical budget will be submitted to council as required by city charter, but the numbers are not final.
A quorum of the Roanoke School Board met this morning to approve a preliminary categorical budget to submit to city council.
The proposed operating budget for next fiscal year is 8.5 percent less (or more than $11 million less) than the current year’s. To make ends meet, the division proposed reducing staff by 146 full-time positions, including 130 instructional positions.
The document will be submitted to council as required by city charter, but the numbers are not final.
“There will be some adjustments,” Superintendent Rita Bishop said.
The proposed categorical budget was prepared Friday, but lawmakers did not agree on a biennial budget until early Sunday morning.
School board members Jason Bingham, Mae Huff, Suzanne Moore, Todd Putney and Lori Vaught voted unanimously in favor of the proposed budget. David Carson and Courtney Penn were absent.
