Roanoke County firefighters subdued a wind-whipped fire that sent a man to the hospital with "significant" burns to the face and hands and killed the family’s three dogs and cat.
The 11:10 a.m. fire at a house in the 4200 block of Carr Rouse Road raged for about 90 minutes before crews from Mount Pleasant, Clearbrook, Back Creek and Vinton brought it under control. The victim, an adult male son of the homeowners, wasn’t identified. He was hospitalized for treatment.
The fire was spewing flames from the basement, where the blaze began, by the time rescuers arrived, the county fire and rescue department said in a news release. The blaze caused heavy damaged to the basement, first floor and attic and there was smoke and water damage throughout the structure, the statement said.
"Weather conditions complicated the firefighting efforts," the fire and rescue statement said. "This area of Carr Rouse Road is extremely icy. The icy conditions only increased with the water flowing from the trucks to douse the flames, making it tricky for crews to move tanker trucks in and out for water supply."
The fire marshal said the cause hadn’t been determined, according to the statement.
