Man and dog killed in Troutville fire
A man and his dog were killed in a fire that burned a duplex apartment in Troutville late Wednesday, authorities said.
Richard Graybill, 67, died along with his dog Buddy, according to Graybill's daughter, Belinda Edwards, of Fincastle. The cause of the fire has not yet been released, but the Botetourt County Sheriff's Office said it started near a utility closet.
Graybill died on the way to the hospital, the sheriff's office said.
Dozens of emergency responders were called to the house on the 100 block of Westview Road, a small street lined with ranch-style houses about a quarter mile from Lee Highway, about 9:30 p.m., said Botetourt County Sheriff Ronnie Sprinkle.
The resident of the adjacent duplex, Candi Eversol, 36, said she saw smoke coming out of the building's vents when she got home from work and called 911, she said. She was displaced from her apartment and made arrangements to stay with friends.
