On what would have been Aveion Lewis' third birthday, more than 20 people spent the day raking through trash at the Smith Gap landfill in an effort to find the infant's body.

Searches, including Roanoke police officers, detectives and officials from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, worked their way through piles of trash that had been delivered from the city to the landfill in Roanoke County, concentrating their search in trash from Roanoke city.

Roanoke Police Captain G.W. Staples said workers were about halfway through the pile that came to the regional landfill from Roanoke city. He said workers found scraps of trash with addresses indicating that portions of it came from streets around Jamestown Place in Southeast Roanoke, from which Aveion was first reported missing.

Morgan Lockett -- Aveion's mother -- and Brandon Lockett, his stepfather, reported to police Jan. 14 that Aveion was abducted, but Brandon Lockett later told police that the toddler had died.

Police haven't said how Aveion might have died, but a search warrant said they are investigating the toddler's death as a homicide.

Brandon Lockett has been charged with felony child neglect, improper disposal of a human body and obstruction of justice.

Morgan Lockett has not been charged.

Search teams continue to scour areas around the boy's King Charles Avenue home, including an industrial park and the Roanoke River.
