Water authority worker injured in Sunday accident

A Western Virginia Water Authority worker was injured Sunday night at the Water Pollution Plant in Southeast Roanoke.

An electrical arc flash burned the man’s hand and forearm at about 9:30 p.m. Sunday while he tended to a medium-voltage electrical panel, the authority’s spokeswoman, Sarah Baumgardner said.

He was transported to a local hospital, transferred to the University of Virginia Medical Center for burn treatment, and discharged Monday morning, she said.

The accident was not weather related, she added.

Baumgardner wouldn’t release the man’s name and didn’t know how long he’ll be off of work.

Crews are stationed at the Brownlee Avenue plant 24 hours a day.
