Fire significantly damaged a home in Southeast Roanoke Monday night, displacing five residents and sending one person to the hospital in a smoky blaze that could be spotted from several blocks away.

Crews were called to the 500 block of Fifth Street Southeast just after 10:30 p.m. where they arrived to find thick black smoke coming from the attic, according to Roanoke Fire-EMS spokeswoman Tiffany Bradbury.

The blaze took just under an hour to get under control, Bradbury said. Four people were in the house when the fire started. One elderly bed-ridden woman was rescued from the rear patio and taken to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital with unspecified injuries.

The fire started in and was contained to the attic, Bradbury said, but there is extensive water and smoke damage throughout the house. The blaze caused about $60,000 in damage, though the cause is still under investigation.

The family of five, all adults, were displaced and are being assisted by the American Red Cross, according to spokeswoman Amy Whittaker.
