First snowfall of the season brings light to moderate accumulation; football, other events postponed

Light rain transitioned into snow fall early this morning, according to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg.

After a couple of hours of light flurries, the snow began picking up about 7 a.m. in the New River Valley. By 8 a.m. snow was falling in Roanoke. Photo gallery: Saturday snow scenes

The Virginia Department of Transportation was not reporting any major incidents on area roadways as of 12 p.m., but said that minor to moderate snow and ice conditions exist on many roads throughout the valleys.

A few flights in and out of Roanoke Regional Airport were cancelled as of 12:45 p.m. Find the latest flight times

The National Weather Service forcasted 1-4 inches of snow for Roanoke and 3-5 inches for Blacksburg. Much of the area remained under a Winter Weather Advisory, while Botetourt and Rockbridge counties were under a Winter Storm Warning. View the latest storm track and weather advisories

Postponements/cancellations across the region:

-- The Fincastle Christmas parade, originally scheduled for today, has been postponed until tomorrow (Sunday) at 2 p.m.

-- The Radford Kiwanis Christmas Parade has been postponed until 1 p.m. on Dec. 12.

-- The Lexington Christmas parade has been postponed until Monday at 6 p.m.

-- The Botetourt County Comprehensive Plan public forum originally scheduled to be at James River High School from 1 p.m. - 3 p.m. has been canceled and will be rescheduled.

Two state semifinal high school football contests involving New River Valley teams have been postponed to Sunday.

-- Radford's game at Lebanon will be played at 2 p.m. Sunday. Christiansburg's game at Amherst County will be played at 3 p.m. Sunday.
