Timing not right for school employee bonuses, says Roanoke Co. supervisor
Roanoke County Board of Supervisors Chairman Mike Altizer said a proposal to give raises to the county school employees will not be considered at Tuesday’s meeting.
He said the timing is not right to give one-time bonuses, given the troubled economy and worsening state revenue forecast.
“There are just too many uncertainties,” Altizer said.
The school board voted last week, while attending a state conference in Williamsburg, to give one-time bonuses of $750 to full-time and $500 to part-time employees. But the proposal needed the ultimate approval of the supervisors to appropriate the funds.
Altizer sent a letter to the school board and superintendent Monday stating the supervisors “cannot take action on the request at this time.”
The school board wanted to use money for the division’s health care reserve fund, which contains about $8 million currently, to reward employees in a fiscal year of hiring and wage freezes.
