Former assistant superintendent, triathlete dies after fighting ALS
Dick Kelley, a former assistant superintendent of Roanoke City Public Schools and a well-known triathlete and biker, died today, less than nine months after being diagnosed with Lou Gehrig's disease.
Kelley, who would have been 64 on Oct. 30, died at his home in Vinton. The former Army officer and Vietnam War veteran learned he had amyotrophic lateral sclerosis only in January. A celebration of his life is being planned.
