Judge grants bond to neo-Nazi leader

U.S. District Court James Turk decided this morning to grant bond to William A. White, who is charged with threatening people by e-mail, telephone and online.
Turk based his decision on a finding by Dr. Conrad Daum, who is the second psychiatrist to evaluate White and determine that he does not pose an imminent threat to the community.
Justice Department attorney Paige Fitzgerald has focused on writings that White posted to his Web site more than a year ago in which he made references to going on a murderous rampage in Roanoke.
In asking Turk to hold White without bond, Fitzgerald pointed to studies that have shown that 75 percent of the school shooters in the United States have hinted in writings at what they were contemplating.
"He’s put out there what he intends to do," Fitzgerald said, "and it’s up to us to make sure that he doesn’t."
Defense attorney David Damico has argued that White’s writings were hyperbole, and that no harm has come to the people he targeted on his Web site.
