Governor's race money: Deeds does well in last two months but McDonnell has more in bank

Democrat Creigh Deeds raised more money than Republican Bob McDonnell during July and August, but McDonnell has more cash in the bank as the expensive Virginia governor’s race heads into the homestretch.

Both campaigns filed updated finance reports with the state Board of Elections Tuesday. Deeds’ campaign collected nearly $3.5 million in July and August and reported a cash balance of nearly $4.4 million.

McDonnell pulled in $2.9 million in the two-month period and reached the end of August with a cash balance of $5.8 million.

Both candidates already have benefited from the largesse of national political parties, which will continue to pour money into the Virginia race through the November election. The Democratic National Committee, chaired by outgoing Gov. Tim Kaine, has pledged a total of $5 million to the Virginia race. The Republican National Committee announced Tuesday that it will commit $7 million to McDonnell and the GOP’s coordinated campaign in Virginia.

McDonnell has raised a total of $13.6 million for the election cycle, according to his finance report. Deeds, who had to win a three-way primary for the Democratic nomination, has collected nearly $9.7 million.

McDonnell’s campaign reported receiving just $350,000 in national party money during the last two months. But the Republican Governors Association also dumped $2.5 million into an affiliated political action committee that is running ads attacking Deeds’ record. The Democratic Governors Association has poured nearly $3 million into an affiliated Virginia committee to go after McDonnell.

Deeds and McDonnell used Tuesday to hype the donations they received from individual donors. McDonnell reported more than 6,200 individual donors, including more than 4,900 new contributors. McDonnell Campaign Manager Phil Cox boasted that the total "is reflective of the grassroots energy we have seen building throughout our campaign."

Deeds reported more than 3,400 individual contributors, including 2,284 new donors. Deeds campaign manager Joe Abbey said the Democrat has "seen a surge in grassroots support" in recent weeks.
