Bicyclist dies after collision on Virginia Tech campus

A woman has died after a vehicle crash on the Virginia Tech campus.

Tech spokesman Larry Hincker said the incident occurred about 4:30 p.m. near the intersection of West Campus and Drillfield drives and involved a collision between a dump truck and a female bicyclist.

The bicyclist died following the crash. Hincker said she was not a Tech student but her identity is being withheld until her family can be notified.

Hincker said the vehicle, owned by William G. Simmons Co. of Narrows, was on campus doing work for the university. It was hauling fill dirt from an area near Lane Stadium to sewer work being performed near Schultz dining hall, he said. The identity of the truck driver has not been released.

Police closed the streets near the intersection where the crash occurred. Virginia Tech police are investigating. A regional crash team was also at the scene, and included investigators from Montgomery County, Christiansburg and Blacksburg. State police officials are also investigating because of the involvement of a commercial vehicle.

Earlier in the day a man was injured on campus while skateboarding between Dietrick and Payne halls, according to Tech police Capt. Joey Albert. That incident occurred at about 9:20 a.m. Albert said the injured man, who is not a student, was airlifted to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital. His condition has not been made available.

In December, a Virginia Tech freshman died on campus after he fell from a skateboard near Aggie Quad Lane.

In Feb. 2008, a car struck a group of five pedestrians on campus. One student was killed and three others injured.
