Wythe County man dies in crash

A man from Wythe County was killed when the Jeep Wrangler he was driving went down a 225-foot embankment south of Wytheville, according to a spokesman with the Virginia State Police.

Stephen Michael Jones, 55, of Speedwell was driving on Virginia 749 (Cedar Spring Road), half a mile west of Virginia 21 (Grayson Turnpike), about 6:20 p.m. Saturday when he drove off the left side of the road.

The Jeep struck a tree, went over a fence and fell down the embankment.

Jones was thrown from the vehicle and died at the scene. It was unclear whether he was wearing a seat belt, police said.
