Skateboarding accident kills 2nd Tech student in six months

A Virginia Tech senior died Tuesday from injuries he suffered in a skateboarding accident in Blacksburg last week.

Sean Logan, 21, of Waxhaw, N.C. was injured while skateboarding on Shenandoah Circle near the intersection of Patrick Henry Drive and Progress Street May 21, said Tom Brown, Tech’s dean of students. He was taken to Montgomery Regional Hospital and later transferred to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital where he died.

An obituary from Heritage Funeral and Cremation Service describes Logan as an avid outdoorsman and Eagle Scout who enjoyed rock climbing and was a radio disc jockey at Tech. It also noted that he was an organ donor.

The Engineering Science and Mechanics major is the second Tech student to die from skateboard-related injuries in the past six months. Gregory Weiner, a Virginia Beach freshman, died from injuries he suffered in a skateboard accident on campus last December.

Brown said the two accidents sounded eerily similar and the university is considering including helmet safety to its health education efforts.
